The Office of the District Education Officer oversees the functioning and supervision of schools imparting education from Classes 9 to 12. A total of 249 schools are functioning in the district, comprising 140 government high and higher secondary schools, 6 aided schools, 3 Kendriya Vidyalayas, 43 private high schools, and 57 private higher secondary schools.
The district has 7 development blocks. School education in 6 blocks, excluding Khalwa, is administered by the School Education Department, while schools in Khalwa Block are administered by the Tribal Development Department. Administrative and financial control at the block level rests with the Block Education Officer. Approximately 4,090 officers and employees are working under the School Education Department in Khandwa district.
The total enrolment in Classes 9 to 12 in government schools across the district is approximately 56,594 students. The School Education Department facilitates the distribution of benefits under 23 types of scholarship schemes administered by various departments through the Madhya Pradesh Samagra Shiksha Portal. The department also implements the bicycle distribution scheme and provides free textbooks to students.
For the academic session 2025–2026, the district recorded a pass percentage of 83.16% in the High School Examination and 83.21% in the Higher Secondary Examination.
